Individuality of Digital Citizenship: (#digcitorchid | #ECGC16)

This date marks the physical representation of partnership through collaboration and exploration.

The Orchid Initiative, a philosophy based organization focused on ‘personal individuality’ designed a student-facilitated session with Edchange Global Classrooms (formerly Edcamp Global). The student-facilitated session used Twitter as a platform to communicate and share techniques to better establish digital citizenship.

Digital citizenship is a community of individuals that effectively use the internet and its platforms to positively engage and share learning opportunities. The Orchid Initiative felt that hosting a student-facilitated Twitter Chat Session would allow for global connections through various educational locations.

The session dealt with intellectual conversations about bettering digital citizenship by making a greater ‘individual’ impact on the community. This ‘impact’ starts with more student opportunities to vocalize opinions and hold discussions on social and educational topics.

Student voices are incredibly important in providing and strengthening current learning situations. The purpose of a global classroom is to educate across borders. Greater knowledge and opportunities can arise through breaking down the walls of enclosed learning facilities. As educators, we need to learn and grow. We can accomplish both by becoming learners and growing through each opportunity provided to us. As learners, we can improve learning for everyone by making it a more meaningful process. It is our own thoughts and ideas that allow for the meaningful process to teach growth through experience and insights brought about through conversations with others.

Fortunately, Edchange Global Classrooms sees the clear necessity of providing opportunities for everyone through their platform in the digcit community. Without the original #stuvoice opportunity provided by Edchange Global Classrooms, I would have never realized the true importance of highlighting and encouraging student voice opportunities.

As a digital citizen, it is my duty to help other fellow student leaders in the digcit community. Therefore, I encourage and embrace change by inviting you to partake in this year’s global event, “Edchange Global Classrooms.” Here’s to 24 hours of non-stop, global classroom collaboration!
